
Finance & Business Operations Rotation Program
Job Description
The Tesla finance team combines financial planning and analysis with broader business decision-making and strategy. We inform some of the most important strategic and operational decisions facing the company, and often lead the cross functional implementation of those decisions. Our core responsibilities include analyses and projections shared with the CEO, CFO, and other executives on a weekly basis.
Rotational Program
The Finance & Business Operations rotation program is for candidates who want to gain meaningful experience across a range of Finance teams while building their foundational analytical skillset. Expectations are high for all members of the Finance & Business Operations team: They must be self-starters who are intellectually curious, learn extremely quickly and collaborate well with diverse stakeholders across finance, accounting and operations. Ideal candidates provide evidence of aptitude for analytical thinking and problem solving, plus genuine interest in tackling executive-level strategic and operational questions.
Subgroup Overviews – Tesla Finance
Finance Analytics works with all other subgroups to:
- Work closely with business, data science, data engineering, and application development teams to design, implement and deploy distributed data services
- Perform rigorous analyses on large, complex data sets and provide strategic insights, hypotheses, and conclusions based upon findings
- Work with data scientists and application engineers to deploy machine learning models as APIs within Tesla's business enterprise applications
Energy Finance works with the Energy Storage and Solar teams to:
- Consolidate inputs on business activities and develop financial projections; maintain projections and track actual financial performance
- Lead pricing efforts for Energy Products, including installation and services, and business planning for global retail, service and sales enablement
- Drive cost optimization in product development for future products with a focus on establishment new markets/novel applications of our storage/solar technologies
Engineering Finance works with the Engineering and Supply Chain teams to:
- Prioritize engineering and financial resources to R&D projects with the highest return on investment. Quantify the impact of technology choices to inform R&D investment decisions
- Drive cost optimization in product development for future products by facilitating product development decisions and feature choices
- Track, report, and proactively manage the cost of our existing products (e.g. Model S, 3, X, Y)
Manufacturing Finance works with the global Manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to:
- Lead manufacturing cost improvement and investment management for Model S, 3, X, Y and energy products
- Evaluate business cases to inform automation, manufacturing scope, and manufacturing location decisions; provide feedback on estimated costs for future programs in development
- Set build plans and capacity planning in the near- and long-term
Corporate Finance works with all Tesla leadership and other subgroups to:
- Lead and develop Tesla’s corporate forecast process and synthesize the forecast for review with Tesla’s leadership and Board of Directors
- Develop and track cross-company efforts to improve gross margin and cash flow, and analyze the impact of proposed business decisions on Tesla’s financial health
- Lead long-term planning for Tesla, including new products/capabilities, and capital needs
Sales, Marketing and Service (SMS) Finance works with the Sales, Services and Marketing teams to:
- Lead pricing efforts for Model S, 3, X, and Y including options, services, and features
- Lead business planning expansion of global retail, service and sales footprint
- Drive profitability (P&L management) at the global, regional, country, and location levels for vehicle sales, vehicle service, and used car sales

Responsibilities
The program includes three rotations over ~2 years:
- Finance Analytics: Develop an understanding of the fundamental drivers of Tesla’s business models and associated data. Automate workflows and reporting while building critical technical skills (including programming)
- Financial Planning: Inform Tesla’s strategic plan in the short- and long- term through projections of Tesla’s financial performance. Candidates gain a big picture view of Tesla’s global business across all product segments and functions while building their knowledge of financial modeling and accounting
- Finance and Business Operations: Support a specific department within Tesla as a Finance partner. Quantify the impact of strategic decisions, evaluate investments, and help business leaders manage day-to-day operations.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree
- 0-2 years of work experience preferred
- A robust analytical skillset and excellent modeling skills (or willingness to learn)
- Strong verbal, written and presentation skills
- Highly collaborative, team oriented, and comfortable leading cross-functional projects
- Fearless when diving into challenges of all sorts, whether learning SQL, unwinding an inefficient business process, making a pricing recommendation that balances profit with customer experience, or connecting R&D spend proposals to our long term product roadmap
